Paying Guests Review
Cast: Shreyas Talpade,Javed Jaffrey,Ashish Chowdhry,Celina Jaitly,Chunky Pandey,Riya Sen,Sayali Bhagat,Neha Dhupia
Director: Paritossh Painter
Producer: Subhash Ghai
The writer of the fun-filled Dhamaal, Paritosh Painter is set to make his directorial debut with Paying Guests starring a huge list of actors; Shreyas Talpade, Aashish Chowdhary, Javed Jaffrey, Chunkey Pandey, Vatsal Sheth, Johnny Lever, Celina Jaitley, Riya Sen, Neha Dhupia, Sayali Bhagat and more. Can a director handle so many actors and characters? Seemed unlikely, and that's exactly what it turned out to be.
Four young, fun loving boys [Shreyas Talpade, Jaaved Jaffrey, Ashish Chowdhary and Vatsal Sheth] begin a crazy house hunt which takes them through a series of ultra comical hurdles in a bid to find that one roof that can tolerate and shelter their combined problems?
In the search for a new Accomodation , these crazy friends manage to convince their crazier landlord Ballu (played by Johnny Lever) to keep them as paying guests but, Ballu has one condition i.e. he wants only couples. They give in to his conditions but how-they are all bachelors! Who will play their wives? The search for wives forms the rest of the tale.
There are so many characters in the film and add to that Krrish, Spiderman, Phoolan Devi, Osama Bin Laden and many more in the climax. Seriously, what the hell were the writers thinking? While it's okay for the makers to ask viewers to leave their brains at home while watching mindless comic capers, it's strictly not okay for them to do the same while scripting the film..!
Also the least one could expect with a female star cast that consists the likes of Celina, Riya, Neha and Sayali is a bit of sensuality and oomph.. Strangely, even that's missing in this poorly directed film.
So what are we left with? About 3 funny scenes, a couple of actors rising above the script, trying their very best to save the film and one good song (Jack and Jill). If that's worth the price of your ticket, go for it.
Just two performances deserve a mention, Shreyas Talpade and Javed Jaffrey, both are brilliant. Johnny Lever is hilarious at times in a short role. The rest vary from average to absolutely pathetic.
The last Mukta Arts film that worked at the box-office was Aitraaz, add Paying Guests to the growing list of Subhash Ghai duds!
